About us
We acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, the traditional custodians of the Country on which The Shop Gallery stands.
Who are we?
The Shop Gallery is owned and run by Anna Couani and Hilik Mirankar. Hilik Mirankar is a Glebe sculptor and Anna Couani is a writer and visual artist. We both have studios in the building.
How does it run?
We accept artworks in any mode including object art, site-specific installations and performance. We welcome both experimental and traditional works. We do not require written proposals but we like to see images of artists’ works and have a face-to-face meeting with the artist or curator. We don’t take commission on sales. The artists run their own shows. We have a non-discriminatory and non-elitist policy but do not accept work that is homophobic or racist.
The facilities
The artists hire a ground floor space consisting of 4 rooms – 2 rooms for exhibiting, a bathroom and a kitchen and there are storage areas. Artists have access to a garden courtyard at the back.
Equipment
We provide a hanging system, plinths and 2 ladders. There are several tables and chairs. We have a digital projector and a projector shelf that can hang from our hanging system. The kitchen is equipped with a fridge, microwave, conventional oven and kettle. There is basic cutlery, crockery and platters. There are 2 print racks – small and large. There are a number of black boards with d-rings that can hang from our hanging system. These can be used for works on paper but works on paper can also be stuck or pinned to the walls.
How to book a show
Our weeks run from Thursday to Wednesday and the minimum booking is for one week. In order to book a show, the artists should decide on a date and then make contact with Anna in order to pay the $200 deposit/booking fee and sign our contract.
